Left Londonbridge 6.6.1840 aboard the "London" with brothers Robert and Obadiah Henry.
Arrived Port Phillip 18 Oct. Anchored off Williamstown 7 pm. Landed Monday 19th.
They took 2 rooms from George Joyce a fellow passenger and nephew of owner of "London" till end of month when Thomas engaged with Mr A>F> Mollison to assist at sheep shearing for 3 months at 30 chillings p.w.
Started out on 2.11.40 in bullock drays, 13 men & 3 drays.
2 miles 1st day, 17 miles 2nd day to Deep Creek ans Sly Grog Shop, 17 miles 3rd day to "Howeys" Gisborne & Inn building. 17 miles 4th day to Ebdens Carlsruhe, good house (1837) and garden, (12 miles through forest).
5th day 12 miles to Mollison's Station "Coliban" 12,000 sheep, 1000 cattle, total 65 miles.
Lived in hut with convicts for 1st week, then in store room roof, sorting & tying wool & washing wheat (smut), Christmas harvesting 50 or 60 acres wheat.
Wnd of January Robert & Henry came up & we inspected a run South of Coliban Feb. 1841.
We walked to melbourne 3 days, stayed 1 night.
Thomas and Robert started fr Geelong next day in boat, 2 nights on water, walked 15 miles to Tolsons and on to old station, too limited and no water, declined it, and stayed 2 or 3 days & brought horse for 60 pounds(?), returning to Melbourne the next day.
George Joyce gave up tailoring and came as a partner, andwe bought the run from mr Mollison to 20 pounds & 720 ewes 72% lambs 750 pounds 30 wethers 16 shillings rams, and caled it "Woodside".
On February 23rd we started for Mollisons with horse & dray, but got stuck on hill, obtained another horse and got to Deep Creek about 11pm. Met with Mollisons bullock drays and got to Mollisons on 27th Feb. MArch 5th started for "Woodside".
On the 6th took over from Mollison. Two men disputed our right but Commissioner decided for us.
Married Lousia Tubbs 11.11.1846. 1st on Register Collins St Baptist Church. Louisa came from England with Joseph on SS Achilles in 1846. They lived in slab homestead at Woodside. Son Joseph, 1st white baby in area.
Thomas died at Fern Hill 29 11 1888, buried at Tylden.

Thomas married Louisa TUBBS To Aust. 1846 [224] on 26 Nov 1846 in Collins St Baptist Church Melbourne Australia. Louisa was born in 1810 and died in 1886 at age 76.

General Notes: Migrated to Australia in 1846 with future B.I.L Joseph on SS Achilles.

Lived in slab homestead at Woodside.
Two childred. Joseph Edward born 7.3.48 was first white child in the area.
It is said that Lubras came 20 miles from Jim Crow to see the white woman's piccaninny.
Mary Louisa was born 31.5.1849.
They leased Woodside in March 1862 and family went to Melbourne while Joseph and Mary Louisa completed their education, returning in 1866 and building a new homestead on Woodside.

65. Robert CLOWES to Vic Aust. 1840 [447] was born in 1815 and died in 1886 at age 71.

General Notes: Migrated to Australia in 1840
Left London Bridge on June 6th 1840 with his 2 brothers Thomas and Henry (Obadiah Henry), by the barque London 368 tons.
19th Oct 1840 landed on beach and walked about 2 miles through bush and swamp to melbourne.
Took 2 rooms from George Joyce, fellow passenger.
Near end of Jan went to mt Macedon with his brother Henry to visit Thomas and they inspected a run which mr Mollison had to sell. Walked back to melb, about 60 miles in 3 days. They were not impressed.
Formed a partner ship with George Joyce and bought th e run at Mt Macedon "woodside"
After marriafge moved to Melb in 1852.
With brother Joseph opened a hardwae shop in elizabeth St. opposite GPO.
Later the shop was partly destroyed by fire - clearing sale 19.11.57.
Robert & family moved to Sydney & opened a Mercery business, see Govt Gazette 1857
while in melb. held office in Melbourne City Council, was Counsellor for Bourke Ward from 30.11.54 to 5.11.57.
Clowes Street, South Yarra (formerly Botanical St.) was so named after him and gazetted in 1860.
Appointed J.P. 12.8.57 and City Magistrate 17.8.57.
Left Sydney 9.8.58 sailed via Cape Horn to Queenstown Ireland, around end of Nov and arriving London 5th dec. Voyage 120 days, same as voyage out on "London".
On account of wife being unwell, left boat at Queenstown, and went to Dublin and spent 4 days with brother Alfred and his wife nee Mrs Woodward, and her son partner in business and 3 daughters inembroidery work.
Robert returned to England in 1858 where he died in 1888..

Robert married Mary Ann HORDEN [448], daughter of Anthony HORDEN to Melb from Sydney [737], in 1847. Mary was born in 1831 and died in 1872 at age 41.

General Notes: According to "Children of one Family" written by Horden family, Robert & family returned to england about 1860 apparently to buy stock and returned in 1863 to Sydey, and opened a hat warehouse next door to L & E Horden making their home above the shop. But when mary Ann became ill early in 1872 Lebbus Horden tookt eh family into his home, and after her death some weeks later, Robert and his children remained with Lebbus at Stramshall for a further four years.
In 1876 Robert closed the warehouse and took his children back to England where they made their home in Gravesend, close to the Dismores.
Robert died and was buried at Gravesend england 9.2.1888.
Micro Fiche records at Kyabram Library confirm that Mary did die in Sydney.

After partnership with Thomas, Robert & George Joyce, went into partnership with Thomas and Robert "Holcombe in Oct. 1846. Dissolved partnership 1852.
Henry took "Holcombe" with homestead at Yandoit 20th Oct. 1854, granted pre-emptive right 640 acres, No. 363 County of Talbot.
2 Feb 1856 bought house at Woodend and shifted from Yandoit on 12.Feb. On 14 Feb Haines bought Holcombe presumably.
18.6.1860 sailed for England.
Married in England in 1861 to Ann Silcock.
Died 1868.

Obadian married Ann SILCOCK [658] in 1861 in England. Ann was born in 1819 and died in 1868 at age 49.

Arrived Melbourne on 21 Nov 1846.
Louisa married Thomas 5 days after arriving in Melbourne.
Joseph was a Chemist at Snethisam Norfolk. Came to position as Apothecary to melbourne Hospital where he stayed until 1852.
Married Marion Allingham, Matron of melbourne Hospital 17.7.49
In 1852 entered into business with his brother Robert in a Hardware shop in Elizabeth Street, after winding it up in 1857 started as a chemist in Castlemaine.
In 1866 moved to melbourne General Cemetery Carlton as Secretary, which position he held till his death in 1901.
He kept close contact with his brothers and was a frequent visitor at Woodside and Holcombe.

Joseph married Marion BRENNAN AKA ALLINGHAM Mtrn M. Hosp. [657] on 17 Jul 1849 in Melbourne. Marion was born in 1822 and died in 1890 at age 68.
